Jung Yong Hwa
A new star who successfully portrayed a healing type character
Dreaming to be a singer, Jung Yong Hwa met with the biggest opportunity in his life in the autumn of 2009. You’re Beautiful became the jump start of his career. Then in January 2010, his dream came true; he debuted as a singer.
The birth of “Towel Guy”, very loved by viewers
— Your enlightenment challenging your acting debut with this drama?
Anyway, acting itself is very difficult. I didn’t even have the time to think. I made myself remember the scripts thoroughly. I checked and checked before the actual filming. So I hadn’t had any rest, and the days just passed like that.
— Did you communicate with the PD?
The PD almost treated me like his son (laughs). He’s always walking around the set holding a megaphone. Because my acting skills were really lacking, I received a lot of instructions from him. Whenever I finished with my parts, I watched my own performance on the PD’s monitor to discuss with him how I did. And I watched how the other actors performed through the monitor, too.
— So, did the writers say anything to you?
No matter what, it’s my first time acting. It seemed the two writers were both very worried before filming started. But after the Myeongdong scene (Episode 6) was broadcasted, they called me and encouraged me saying I did well. Just because they said that to me, I worked even harder.
— Yonghwa’s satisfactory level of himself?
Because that Myeongdong scene was one of the coolest Shinwoo scenes, I practiced my lines the whole night before filming. I did a lot of research for that too. But there were too many people around for me to focus. I didn’t get to do more than 20 to 30 % of what I’d prepared. It’s very regrettable.
— How did you feel being nicknamed “Towel Guy” and “Milk Guy”?
“Towel Guy” came from the scene in Episode 2, when I put a towel over the head of the very uneasy Minam in the changing room. I had filming schedule when it was broadcasted, so I watched with the crew in the set. Then I suddenly got a call from my parents. They said, “Your name is No.1 on internet search now.” I was like, “what’s going on?” It must be the viewers liked the scene a lot. I felt so blessed to get that nickname. I’m so thankful that the scene became the key that the viewers like me. And then in Episode 3, there’s a heartwarming scene of giving milk to Minam. It was very popular among viewers too. I’m so grateful to the writers who gave Shinwoo many lovable scenes, and to the PD who helped me with my acting.
— If Yonghwa were to be in Shinwoo’s situation, he would know Minam is a girl right away too?
I’m the type who would consider her difficulties and try my best to help too. The difference is Shinwoo was the mature type who talked little. Since I’m only 22 (after some calculation), I love playing around with friends happily.
— Even the hair styles of A.N.JELL were hop topics. What do you think of Shinwoo’s styles?
Shinwoo only changed hair styles once. In the beginning, the bangs were all up, but they were down half way through. And Shinwoo’s hair was dyed. Though it wasn’t a big change, there’s this different charm in a way. I think the not flashy clothes and hair style had helped to portray Shinwoo’s quiet and calm personality.
— What was the vibe of the filming sets like?
The cast and crew had very good collaboration. I always joked around in the sets too. I would imitate Keunsuk hyung’s acting, and then laughed out loud. Shinwoo had no laughing scenes at all, but I kept laughing in the filming sets. All thanks go to the PD, for he kept this smiling face filming. Sometimes we went overboard, but he never minded us. As he actually liked our jokes, we were so happy filming.
— What did you talk among A.N.JELL during the filming periods?
Keunsuk hyung and Hongki like fashion, so they talked a lot about clothes. We introduced the music we like to each other too. It was happy talking about music.
— What is Jang Keunsuk like as an actor?
Because I was new and knew nothing about acting, I still could tell from the following. No matter how funny were the jokes, once the camera started rolling, he changed instantly. He could change so drastically. I was like, “So cool! There’s the professional. I have so much to learn.”
Though Shinwoo didn’t get the girl, he’s become happier
— How did Yonghwa switch feelings to play Shinwoo?
Shinwoo was this perfect guy. So if I was laughing but needed to start filming, I would take a deep breath first. Then I would take another deep breath and lowered my voice to say “Minam”. That way I became Shinwoo. Hahaha.
— How was it like working with Park Shin Hye?
Shinhye had helped me a lot from beginning till end. During breaks, she always rehearsed the lines with me. But for the towel guy scene, we hadn’t known each other long enough. I felt so awkward, as there were just the two of us. I was kind of afraid, thinking “what to do?” (Laughs) But Shinhye didn’t mind facing the awkward me. Since then we became closer.
— Lee Hongki and Jeremy were the same to you?
Jeremy was actually Lee Hongki (Laughs). If I have to say one difference, it’s that Hongki was more of an adult. Hongki is cute and likes pranks, but he’s very mature about work. Still the two basically are the same. Hongki isn’t the kind to connect to strangers fast however.
— Shinwoo’s one-sided love is just too sad. Which is the most heart-breaking scene to you?
I had this heavy heart from beginning till end. Whenever I got new scripts, I thought, “Will I get to confess? Still no this episode…” So I waited and waited to confess.
— What do you think about the end of Shinwoo’s love story?
I think compared to Minam and Shinwoo, Minam and Taekyung are a better match. But I still feel bad for Shinwoo, he’s such a great guy. He was able to give up when rejected revealing his true heart. That’s so cool.
Through A.N.JELL, he experienced the biggest stage in his life
— What do you think is the charm of Shinwoo?
He is cold to people around him. But to the girl he likes, he’s very warm and kind. That’s his biggest charm.
— The hardest time filming?
The scene with Minam in the park (Episode 13). There was first snow; it was so cold that day. My mouth felt frozen and I couldn’t say my lines properly. They were longer scenes already and I kept messing up my lines. So the filming took long… It was so so tough (bitter laughs). But when I came to the last part talking to the shadows made by the headlights, I could focus on my acting finally. I think that was the most emotional scene among the 16 episodes.
— You’ve participated in the OST making too. Your thoughts?
Of course I was very happy. I even thought, “Will there be one more song?” (Laughs) I was responsible for the rap part in the song “Promise”. I wrote the rap lyrics too.
— How did it feel standing on the stage as A.N.JELL?
It was the very first time that I was on a stage of that kind of scale. I’m in a band called CNBLUE, but we have been performing only in small live houses. So I felt very nervous in front of thousands of people. It was such a valuable lesson. One day when I will go on bigger stages, this experience can be very helpful.
— When did playing Shinwoo become a happy experience?
It was almost the end of filming. When I had got used to the circumstances in the filming sets and began to think script reading was actually interesting, filming was to end. It was such a pity. I even thought, “It would be great if there’s an extension.”
— There’s the rumor that they will film Season 2. If you were to take part, what would you let viewers see about Shinwoo?
They will really let me play Shinwoo again?… If I could really try acting again, I’m confident that I can do better. Shinwoo had been only sad and heart-broken, I hope everybody can see a happy Shinwoo next time.
— What’s the meaning of You’re Beautiful to Yonghwa?
Through You’re Beautiful, I became interested in acting. For that I’m most grateful. I don’t think I will get any bigger opportunity like You’re Beautiful in my entire life. I feel so fortunate to have worked with PD Hong Sung-chang and Writers Hong. This is a drama that I will never forget.
